and allied health sciences. Faculty members at Oriental college of Pharmacy make
extra efforts to give their students up-to-date information on the subjects taught.
Students are trained as per the ever changing need of todays’ pharmaceutical research
era. The University level pharmaceutical education in India made its beginning in 1932
when the first degree course B.Pharm was started at the Banaras Hindu University by
late Prof. M. L. Schroff. The course was set on the pattern of the B.Pharm course of
London University. During the 1940s and 50s the Punjab University(1944), L. M.
College of Pharmacy, affiliated by Mumbai University (1947), Andhra University (1951)
and Sagar University started degree level education. The Pharmacy curriculum then
continues with Industrial orientation by updating from time to time which includes introductions of new courses like biotechnology, computer application in pharmacy,
clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacology in the undergraduate course.
In our day-to-day life pharmacists play an important role, as they are very much into
research and manufacture of drugs. Thus pharmacy is closely associated with scientific
study.
Pharmacy as a career option has always been in demand. India being a huge nation of
about a billion populations, diseases both minor and major has been a curse upon the
weak and the poor. In the previous centuries and almost till the middle of the 20th
century killer diseases such as acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, depression,
tuberculosis, measles, anemia etc have been affecting thousands every year. With the
advancements in medical science most of these diseases have been brought under
control, with the help of high powerful antibiotics and other life saving drugs. This is
where pharmacy steps in to fill the void.
